Drogheda United v Derry City, Hunky Dory Park, 7.45pm kickoff
– Game live on Drive105 and BBC Radio Foyle
Derry City will make the trip to Hunky Dorys Park on Friday night to take on Drogheda United in the Premier Division of the Airtricity League. This game follows two impressive home displays, the last of which was a two nil win against Cork City last Friday night. Mark Farren scored his 109th goal for the clubin that game, which leaves him just 3 goals away from Liam Coyle’s record of 112 goals.
The last tie between the two sides took place in the Brandywell last September where a Dave Rogers own goal two minutes from time secured a point for the home side. As always, this promises to be a tight game with both sides showing some goalscoring form, lying two points and places off each other: Derry City lie third with Drogheda United in fifth in the table.
Speaking about friday night’s game City manager Declan Devine said,
“We fully expect a very diffificult game in Drogheda on Friday night. Mick Cooke has not just strengthened his starting eleven but his squad as a whole. I feel that Mick has added some talented players and with eight goals scored in their first four games they now pose a real goal-scoring threat to any team. All you have to do is look at their opening game of the season and how unfortunate they were not to win against the league champions to see how far they have come under Mick Cooke.”
Devine continued, “We are under no illusion that this will be a real ding dong game, but I feel that we have showed a little more consistency over the last week or so and that is what myself and Paul Hegarty have been working on with the team. Both myself and Paul are happy with the way our defence has gelled together so far this season, and with the likes of Rory Patterson, Patrick McEleney and Stephen McLaughlin starting well, it’s been a case of so far so good. But despite our good start we know we can’t rest on our laurels on Friday. We need to keep it going but if we stick to our game plan we should come away with a favourable result.”
Derry City are without Eddie MaCallion for Friday’s game due to an ankle injury while Stephen McLaughlin (hamstring) and Patrick McEleney (toe) will undergo late fitness tests.
