Derry City will host League champions Sligo Rovers in the Brandywell this Friday evening. Having gotten their season underway last Monday night with a 1-1 draw at home against Drogheda United in the Setanta sports cup, this will be the Candystripes first game of the new Airtricity League season.
Speaking ahead of the game, Derry Manager Declan Devine said, “I was very happy with the overall performance of the team last Monday against Drogheda, and felt that if it wasn’t for one lapse in concentration we would have won the tie. And it’s these types of lapses that we must cut out of our game ahead of Friday night’s clash with champions Sligo Rovers. Friday’s game is one that we are all looking forward to, and one that will test us as a squad. Ian has made great strides with this side over the last season and he has added some quality players to what was an already solid squad. But there is nothing quite like a north west derby between the current FAI Cup Champions and the Airtricity League Champions to get a great atmosphere going around the town and ground.”
Also speaking ahead of the game Barry Molloy had this to say: “I’m really looking forward to getting the season started now. It has been a long but enjoyable pre-season but it’s good to have that behind us now. The game on Friday will be a good test for us that will show exactly where we are as a squad and how far we have come. It’s always good to get off to a positive start and after our poor home form last season it would be great to get points on the board early, We all know that in order to do this we must dig deep and perform to our maximum.”
Derry will be without the services of both Kevin Deery and Dermot McCaffery who are both suspended for the tie while Sean Houston (knee) Paddy Kavanagh (hamstring) are on the injury list.
