Derry City are pleased to announce the signing of Alon Netzer for the 2017 season.
The 23 year old Israeli national spent last season with ASA Târgu Mureș in Romania, having started his career in the Israeli domestic set up.
The player is a centre half and will provide defensive cover for Ryan McBride and Aaron Barry, with the latter on the comeback trail from the injury that dogged the tail end of his last season.
Speaking after watching City wrap up pre-season with a 3-1 win against Dergview,
“I am excited to be here and want to get started as soon as possible. I saw some players with good potential. I will train tomorrow and meet the team and get to know everyone. I haven’t seen much of the League of Ireland but I have heard it is an exciting league with lots of young players.”
Speaking about his new addition, Kenny Shiels pointed to the fact that Netzer offered another defensive option
“We’re pleased to get him because we were low (in options) at the back. We’re covered in practically every position now. It’s another addition and I’ve been working hard on this. It hasn’t just happened it’s taken a little while and he’s a good footballer – a left side centre back and he brings healthy competition to the back four.
“He’s played in Romania against teams like Dynamo Bucharest and he’s played in his native country Israel. He’s got a Romanian passport so dosen’t need a work permit. I want to see him develop with us.”
