Derry City 0 - Limerick 0 City failed to score at home for the first time this season, as they were frustrated by a committed Limerick side.
The home side had the lion's share of possession and chances in what was a forgettable game. The visitors appeared happy to settle for a point from the off, and defended stoutly to deny the home side. City had their best chances in the first half when McDaid, McEleney and in particulary Cassidy all had the chances to make the breakthrough. With McEleney playing in a deep lying role behind David McDaid, City looked a real threat at time and pressed for long periods of the half, without making the breakthrough. McEleney struck the post with one effort and McDaid was unable to turn the rebound home, but the best chance fell to Cassidy. He found himself one on one with the keeper but appeared to shocked by the amount of time he had, eventually shooting wide of the near post. City had a number of chances from corners and free kicks and had a shout for a penalty but the officials saw nothing, much to the annoyance of the home side. Martin Deedy had the best chance for Limerick, his powerful free kick was stopped low to his right by Gerard Doherty. Mark Farren was introduced for Cassidy at the start of the second half but once again the Candystripes were shut out by the Blues. As the prospect of a hard earned point drew ever closer, Limerick retreated even further into their own half, and a wall of blue shirts faced City on ever attack. Credit has to go to the visitors who were exceedingly discplined as they harried and chased the home side all over the pitch to close down opportunity. City had a few half chances in the second half but in truth Dave Ryan wasn't overly troubled in the opposition goal. City huffed and puffed for long periods but ulitmately without the bounce of the ball it was one point instead of three. |
