Wexford Youths 1 Derry City 5 City had another great day on their travels, ruthlessly exposing Wexford Youth to strike five time and record a comprehensive away victory and move into second place. In truth, the game was over after twenty minutes as City had established a two goal advantage and the home side reduced to ten men. Eddie McCallion failed to recover from the injury suffered on Tuesday night, Shane McEleney came in at right back in the only change from the late victory over Galway United.
City opened their account with a fortunate goal, as Harkin chased a long ball over the top and just managed to cut the ball back across into the Wexford penalty area. With no Derry player near him, Anthony Wolfe stabbed the ball past his own keeper and City were one nil ahead. Having made the breakthrough , City began to play with confidence and David McDaid raced free and broke into the penalty area. He was hauled down by Chris Kenny and the left back shown a straight red card for a professional foul. Despite it appearing as if the foul was committed in the box, the referee awarded a free kick right on the eighteen yard box. Patrick McEleney stepped up and and smashed the ball into the top right corner to make it two nil. With the home side reduced to ten men, City dominated possession for the remainder of the half and Deery and McDaid both had chances to increase the visitors advances. The large pitch at Ferrycarraig Park and the numerical advantage meant that Derry were able to attack and while and forced a number of chances but were unable to add to their tally before the break. The second half continued in the same vein, with City striking twice in the opening ten minutes of the second period. First up McClean was upended in the box and McEleney cooly sent Holden the wrong way to make it three. Fantastic interplay saw Derry cut a swathe through the home defence and with a line of players queueing up to finish, McClean buried it to make it four. However just when it looks as if the visitors would run away with the game, the home side struck. Derry failed to deal with a free kick and the ball was in a melee of players it appeared as if Mark McChrystal got the last touch to carry it over his own line. The Derry players appealed vigorously that the ball had been cleared before it cross the line. City continued to dominate and in truth should have tagged on another to their final tally. Stephen Kenny will be delighted with the fluidity of the 4-4-1-1 system which City have settled into, now with fifteen goals in the last four games. City emptied their bench with Sweeney, Cassidy and Clarke all introduced and there was to be one more goal before the final whistle. City won a free kick midway inside the Wexford half and the whipped delivery was chested into his own net by Malone to complete an afternoon to forget for the home side. However for City it was another fantastic away day as they continue their impressive run of form. The Candystripes have now moved into second place. With the massive game against Shelbourne this Friday at the Brandywell City will be hoping to keep the pressure on Waterford in top spot.
