Kenny's Heroes

By Eleanor Doherty, Derry : 05 Feb

While watching the FAI awards last night, it was great to see our very own Kevin Deery being honoured for his goals against Gretna.

I really think that Derry City FC rarely get the the praise that they deserve.

Whoever would have thought that on a cold Windy day back In December, that the game in Lansdowne Road could turn out to be the best ever FAI Cup Final. For a team to come back three times to win a game which had been taken out of our hands so many times!

At the end of the day, Derry City has given the eircom League a amazing run and let's Hope this year we will continue.

As a lady fan of Derry City, I have watched them from their return to senior football, and think that this is the best Derry City Team.

I have travelled the length and the breadth of Ireland to support the team - even at times when nobody going to the was going to the Brandywell or to the away matches.

Things have changed a lot during those years and it has all been for the best.

I have seen managers come and go, and I don't know about our other supporters out there, but when it was announced that Stephen Kenny was leaving my house was like a wake - it was like a member of the family had died.

I will never forget the last match at the Brandywell. The rain bounced of the terraces and the wind blew a gale.

I really dont think that the man himself could have written the ending any better. OK - we didn't win the League, but what we did do, Was show a manager that we really appreciated what he had done for the people of Derry. He made it cool to wear a Derry City top and to wear it with pride.

I know that this era has now gone and that we ended up sending him off in style.

This is a new season with a new manager and few new players. Let's hope that another new page of Derry city history can be written and be even better year then last year.
