Derry City Ladies played their last home game against fierce rivals and 2nd placed Lisburn Ladies at YMCA grounds on Thursday night knowing defeat would hand the Championship league title to their opponents.
In a tense and often physical game it was Derry’s captain Shannon Dunne who opened the scoring on 24 minutes but Lisburn equalised before half time.
Derry went ahead early in the 2nd half when Rachel Barnaby scored a cracking goal from 30m but again Lisburn came back at Derry and scored with 15 minutes remaining.
With 5mins remaining Lisburn scored their 3rd and looked to be favourites to take the league title but this Derry team have proved all season they do not give in easily and in a storming finish to the game Derry’s Sharlene O’Hara scored the equaliser to leave the Candystripes 3 points clear and one game left away versus Valley Rangers on Wednesday 26th August in Mallusk.
One point will bring the League title to Derry City and automatic promotion to the NIWFA Premier league where Derry City will compete against teams such as Glentoran, Crusaders and Linfield.
Derry meet Lisburn once again on Friday 4th September in the Championship cup final at Moyola FC with a 7.30pm kick off.
