Derry City 2 Bray Wanderers 0
City got back to winning ways with a hard fought 2-0 win over Bray Wanderers but it appears as if the heavy schedule of games is beginning to take its toll.
City laboured for long stages to put the bottom team away and boss Shiels had made a number of changes, with Nicky Low missing out through injury and Darren Cole dropping out of the squad. Ronan Curtis returned to the starting line up as City looked to put the disappointing defeats of last week behind them.
Aaron McEneff was the man who got City over the line with a goal in either half, to break the deadlock and then to kill the game with four minutes to go. City were well in control of the first half without really threatening the keeper.
Five minutes before half-time, a run into the box from Jamie McDonagh invited a Bray tackle to bring him down and a penalty was duly awarded. McEneff stepped up to fire it home on his 101st appearance to send Derry in one up at the break.
In the second half the visitors had a number of chances but the City defence held firm. City struggled to get the second insurance goal and the Bray defence were resolute for long periods.
Kelly had a number of chances for the visitors to get back into it and the Seagulls may feel that they should have had a penalty when Kelly went to ground under a challenge from Toal.
City introduced a number of young players in the closing stages with Delap and Farren both getting their chances to influence the manager’s thinking.
McDonagh can count himself mighty unlucky after his free-kick from Derry’s half almost caught out Evan Moran in Bray’s goal as the ball cracked off the post.
McEneff killed the game off with five minutes to go when he fired home from 20 yards to ensure that City would move back into fourth place, for 24 hours at least, with a win over Bray.
City will move on to face Waterford United away on Friday as they look to close the gap on the top sides in the division.
