Cork City 4 – 2 Derry City
Derry were looking to recover some form after Friday night’s defeat at home to Sligo but a tough trip south to Cork might not have been their first choice.
The sunny bank holiday afternoon saw Cork take an early lead through a Karl Sheppard header at the near post.
Both sides were fairly matched for the rest of the half and that goal was all that separated the sides at the break.
Sheppard doubled the Leesiders’ lead within 30 seconds of the restart as the Derry defence was bypassed with an intelligent through pass.
A shot from outside Cork’s box by Ronan Curtis caught the opposition goalkeeper off guard and the Candystripes were back in the tie.
Minutes later, Ronan Hale found himself with the ball in the Cork box and hammered high into the net from a tight angle at the near post and Derry were back on level terms.
The sides weren’t to be on equal footing for long as Cork were awarded a free kick just outside Derry’s box and Sadlier’s effort found the back of the net as the Derry wall was split apart.
The final nail came when a long punt up the pitch from Cork keeper McNulty, took out City’s defence and Graham Cummins’ head was on the end of it to loop Ger Doherty. The crossbar had almost saved Derry’s blushes but Cummins was there to put away the rebound.
Derry’s next game is away to Bohemians on Friday night.
