We caught up with new signing and the man who grabbed the winning goal on his debut, Ally Roy, to find out about the move to Brandywell and his thoughts on the Europa League tie this week.
Welcome to Derry City Ally, do you want to tell us a little bit more about how the move to the Brandywell came about?
“As you know I was on loan at Sligo and it was coming up to my last game and was planning on going back to Hearts before my agent got in touch with a couple of options. He told me that Derry were an option and I took a couple of days to think about it and it was something that appealed to me.
The move kind of suited me, and my plans and my family. It is a good opportunity and a good club to get to where I want to be with my ambitions in football.”
It looked as if you wouldn’t be available on Friday, had you resigned yourself to not playing?
“I had been at the club since Monday and had played in the friendly against Cliftonville, as far as I was aware everything was going to go through and I was expecting to play on Friday.
As it went on and on I started a panic and I thought I might not get to play. Every day I was checking was I was going to be able to play. Phoned Kenny and he told me that we were still waiting on the clearance. He told me that if it went through I would be playing but that if it didn’t, obviously I can’t play.
The way I found out was that it popped up on my phone, on my Twitter, to say I had got the clearance. I got the text then off my agent as well to say I could play. I still prepared for the game as I usually would, it was a bonus I got to play and we got the three points.
Even better, I got the goal as well”
It must be very pleasing to get off the mark on your debut? What can Derry fans expect? What type of player would you consider yourself to be?
“Some of the fans will have seen me before when I played against Derry. I’d describe myself as a very attacking player who is quick wants to go past players and attack players. I want to cause defender problems and score goals.
As a striker that is your role is in the team to score and create. I obviously started off to do that and was lucky to get off to a flyer and hopefully the fans will see more of the same.”
What did you know about the League of Ireland before you came? What do you think of it now, given you played most of teams and in most venues?
“I was on loan in the lower leagues in Scotland and that is what I knew. Before I went to Sligo I was in Norway for a few weeks as I went there as I wanted to try something different. I wanted to try and test myself both on the pitch and off the pitch.
I came without really knowing anything about the league, bar a couple of players from having played against them. Going to Sligo, I loved it there, it was different and I didn’t know what to expect. I think the League is a bit underrated, there are teams that don’t really get a lot of praise. A lot of teams in the league are strong outfits and hard to beat. It’s a good standard, its a style that I like and after a comfortable with, its a league that I want to play in.”
Dinamo Minsk comes to the Brandywell this week, this will be a new experience, what are you expecting?
“Yeah, it was something that appealed to me. It is something that not many people get to do in their career. You could easily stay in the leagues in Scotland and be content. I am ambitious person and I want to push myself on and that was on of the reasons for coming here.
Playing in the Europa League and playing here at Derry gives you that platform to push yourself. Hopefully we can get a good result this week and in the hopefully do the same in away leg and get into the next round. It is something I am looking forward to and something I want to try.”
Something different to finish, who do you fancy for the World Cup?
“Before the turnaround a went with a bit of an underdog shout and said Croatia would surprise a few teams. They have come this far. So I think Croatia and France for the final”
