Derry City v St. Pat’s – Fri 24th Aug – KO 7.45pm – Brandywell
Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup Second Round
“It’s game on!” for Kenny Shiels and his Derry side who welcome Pat’s on Friday evening for a mouth-watering all Premier Division second round tie in this year’s FAI Cup.
City come into this one off the back of a narrow defeat to Waterford in the league last week, but Kenny is hopeful the Candystripes can better that performance and progress to the next round:
“We will work hard for each other and transfer all the things we practised during the week, in training, into our performance.”
Shiels will have almost a full contingent to choose from with no fresh injury issues. The hosts will be without Nicky Low and Conor McDermott who remains doubtful.
Derry netted a record breaking 12 times against non-league Blarney United in the first round and equalled the biggest winning margin of 10 goals (12-2) but manager Shiels has warned that they face stiffer opposition this time around against a confident Saints outfit:
“They went to Cork and got a great result there on Sunday and their emotions will be very, very positive and they’ll be coming here expecting to progress.”
Derry look forward to hosting this years EA Sports Cup Final in September where they battle Cobh Ramblers, however their manager is stressing that the impetus is strictly on Friday’s game and that his side is “not thinking of anything else but making it into Monday’s draw.”
When the Candystripes last met St. Pat’s in a crunch clash back in July it was Rory Patterson, now of Crusaders, who bagged a late winner to secure all three points with the goal subsequently followed by three red cards, as such this Pat’s side will be aiming to avenge that defeat upon their return to Foyleside.
