Derry City will this weekend look to secure the EA SPORTS League Cup trophy for a record 11th time when they take on Cobh Ramblers at the Brandywell in Sunday’s decider (kick off 4pm).
It has obviously been a competition close to the Candystripes’ hearts down through the years and there was no hiding Kenny Shiels’s determination this evening ahead of a frenetic few days for his charges.
Despite a busy week upcoming, the boss only had eyes for Ramblers as he contemplated the opportunity to bring silverware to the club.
“I would love to see this place rammed on Sunday as I know what type of a lift that gives the players. The atmosphere when we returned to Brandywell was unreal and you only have to look at our results during that time to see how the boys responded.”
“This is a great opportunity for the people of the City to come out and watch their team in a major final on their own doorstep. These opportunities don’t come around all that often and while we fully acknowledge that Cobh Ramblers are not coming here for a day out, we have to focus on what we do.”
“It is a chance for us to give our supporters something to cheer about.”
“We have a fantastic chairman at this club and while we will all be working towards his vision of self-sustainability, it would be very fitting if he could see us win this cup on our own ground.”
“The players and backroom staff have worked very hard in preparation for this final and we will do everything in our power to make it a day not to be missed.”
