Derry City 3 – 0 UCD
The Candystripes opened their 2019 SSE Airtricity League campaign with a win over the students of UCD at the Brandywell.
Declan Devine’s new look side needed to gel quickly and after a nervy opening 15 minutes saw UCD threaten.
Great work from Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe put Ciaron Harkin through who pulled back for Parkhouse to slot home the opening goal.
Although it settled the nerves, City couldn’t manage to build on their lead before the break.
In the second half, a failed UCD clearance left their goalkeeper stranded and Eoghan Stokes attempted to capitalise from the half-way line and as the UCD defence scrambled back, Collins knocked it into his own net, doubling Derry’s lead.
The third followed soon after and Stokes wasn’t to be denied his goal this time as a deflected effort lobbed the UCD shot-stopper.
It finished 3-0 to the hosts and UCD can thank Kearns in goal for it not being higher as he prevented efforts from Delap and Junior as City tried and failed to increase their advantage.
City next head to Tallaght to take on Shamrock Rovers on Friday night before welcoming Waterford to the Brandywell on Monday 25th.
