Derry City’s under-13’s got their first points on the board on Saturday afternoon when they ran out convincing winners against Monaghan & Cavan at a picturesque Aileach Grounds in Burnfoot.
Two late goals in Mayo last weekend had seen the club’s youngest side lose 4-2 in their opening match but they made no mistake this time and fully deserved their victory.
Paddy McCourt and Neil McCafferty watched from the sidelines as their young charges withstood some early pressure from the visitors before taking complete control.
Brandon Crockett put the Candystripes in front mid-way through the first half after some lovely build-up play and the impressive Oisin Harkin made it 2-0 with a strike from range just before half time.
Monaghan & Cavan were hanging on a bit either side of the break and the scoreline could have been a lot worse before substitute Cormac McLaughlin sealed the emphatic win just on the hour mark.
City were rarely troubled after those opening exchanges and easily held their opponents at arms length after that.
These are very early days for this Derry team but there were a lot of positives for the coaching staff to take from the win.
From the goalkeeper out, City looked comfortable on the ball and not surprisingly their willingness to get it down and play was apparent throughout.
