Derry City’s Player/Coach, Caoimhe McLaughlin has won the ‘Service to Sport’ at the first ever Northern Ireland Women’s Awards.
Inspiring women were awarded at a glamorous event celebrating female successes. It took place in Wellington Park Hotel Belfast on Wednesday 26th June 2019.
The Awards honoured the talent and hard work of female professionals and entrepreneurs across the region. It celebrated the achievements of women entrepreneurs, business women, professionals, civil servants, sports people, charity workers and others that make Northern Ireland a great and more equal place to live and work.
Caoimhe said “Joining in 2002 as part of the Club’s first ever women’s team I have seen first hand the positive transition that girls and women’s football in Derry has come through, most notably in the past 5 years since Rory Kehoe established the Derry City FC Women’s and Girls Academy. The Academy now caters for over 60 players in age groups including U9’s, U11’s, U13’s, U16’s and U19’s.”
“I was so happy to be nominated, especially when I learnt of the other sportspeople who were in the ‘Services to Sport’ category. And then to go on and win the award was something very unexpected for me and is a real honour. For the Women’s Club to be recognised in this way is amazing. The dedication of all the volunteer coaches in each of our girls and women’s squad structures has brought about a such a positive change for the Club as a whole.”
Men’s Manager Declan Devine said “Caoimhe is a very valued member of staff at Derry City Football Club and works tirelessly behind the scenes in Derry and surrounding areas to establish and enhance the growth of girls and women’s football in the North West area of Northern Ireland.”
“Caoimhe has evolved from a leading figure in playing for the first ever Derry City FC Women’s team in 2002 to the figure head that has grown it to what it is today. The amount of work behind the scenes that Caoimhe takes upon herself in relation to having a girls and women’s teams is an absolute credit and we as a Football Club are very lucky to have her work in our Club.”
“Caoimhe gives up an incredible amount of her time on a daily and weekly basis to provide a very warm and welcoming environment for the young girls of the Derry area to come and showcase their ability. I would like personally to thank Caoimhe for her brilliant leadership and coaching ability that she brings to our football club on a daily basis and have no doubt that Caoimhe is a hugely worthy recipient of the Services to Sport Award.”
