Derry City v Waterford – Mon 29th July – KO 7.45pm – Brandywell
SSE Airtricity League
City will look to hit back after Friday’s derby defeat in Ballybofey when they face Waterford at the Brandywell tonight.
The Candystripes struggled to break down Harps and lost out to a second half header from Harry Ascroft. However City have the opportunity to get back into the race for fourth if they can beat the Blues tonight at Brandywell. With Bohs drawing on Saturday, City can cut the gap to three points.
Junior is the main injury doubt for City but Barry McNamee and new signing Grant Gillespie should come into the reckoning for the home side. Michael McCrudden continues his comeback from injury whilst Eoghan Stokes, Darren McCauley and Conor Davis may see Friday’s disappointing result as an opportunity for them to grab a spot in the starting eleven.
Declan Devine is also available for the home side, having served a suspension during the Finn Harps game. The manager will be keen to be back on the sideline, as he was a spectator as City slumped to defeat on Friday night.
The manager spoke about the benefit of having no time to feel sorry for themselves after Friday night’s “blip”. With ten games left to go, the manager is focused on ensuring that the team maximising their points return between now and the end of season.
“We are not going to pick up 30 points from 30, but we’ve got to try. Derry City Football Club is a high performance environment and you have to have an appetite”
This is the first of two meetings with Alan Reynold’s side, with the two teams facing off in the EA Sports Cup Semi-Final next Monday.
The Blues defeated UCD on Friday to arrest a run of defeat which have seen them side down the table.
The two games between the sides so far this season have been high scoring affairs, with a 3-2 win for City at the Brandywell followed up by a 2-2 draw in the RSC. City thought they had nicked all three points with a late goal from Darren Cole, only to concede a penalty deep into injury time to allow the home side to rescue a point.
On match day from 7pm, tickets will be on sale from Long Tower Youth Club which can be accessed from the stadium car park.
