Derry City Football Club is saddened to learn today of the passing of former player, Matt Doherty.
Matt made his debut for the Candystripes in 1958 before moving to Glentoran in 1961 where he earned ‘B’ International status in Northern Ireland’s midfield.
He returned to the Brandywell in 1964 and was part of that wonderful City side that won the Irish Cup the same year and the league title the following season.
He played in those memorable European ties against FK Lynn and Anderlecht and became a very popular figure among the City support until he retired due to poor health in 1969.
Goalkeeper Eddie Mahon was a good friend of Matt’s and described him today as “a fantastic box-to-box player who could run all day.”
Matt’s wake will take place at his home at Dunmore Gardens with his funeral on Friday morning.
The condolences of everyone at the club goes out to Matt’s wife Ann, and the entire family circle.
May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.
