Derry City vs Wexford – Fri 9th Aug – KO 7.45pm – Brandywell
Extra.ie FAI Cup First Round
Kevin Deery insists Derry City will be fully focused on the job in hand as they take on Wexford at the Brandywell on Friday night (7.45) in the first round of the Extra.ie FAI Cup.
The Candystripes’ Assistant Manager is well aware of the potential pitfalls in these early round ties and said there was no danger of complacency affecting the home side.
“We’ve prepared for this game as we would for any other because we want to win it.”
“Wexford won’t give us anything for free and this is a competition that we would like to go deep in, but we have to earn that”
“We needed extra time on Monday night which can mean tired legs so we’ve had to manage things this week. We have a full squad to choose from so we have good options to consider and everyone is keen to play.”
Deery also acknowledged that two players- Peter Cherrie and Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe have been nominated for the July Player of the Month, and suggested that it was fitting recognition of what’s going on at the club.
‘We’ve only lost twice in the last couple of months and we’re now up to third in the league and in the final of the EA Sports Cup. The boys are playing some excellent football and it’s good to see that being recognised.”
“It hasn’t happened by accident- it’s come about because of sheer hard work and it has been exactly the same this week ahead of the cup game.”
Friday night’s game will be Derry’s 1500th in the League of Ireland and should they win, it will be their 700th victory in that time.
From 7pm on match night, tickets will be on sale from Long Tower Youth Club which can be accessed from the stadium car park.
